Ballina Cup History
Now one of the major drawcards of the NSW country racing calendar, the Ballina Cup was inaugurated on Boxing Day, 1914 and has a long rich history.
The first Ballina Cup winner was Poor Tom who carried 7 stone 11 pounds, 49.5kg in today’s metric terms, to victory over the second placed Hailshot and third placegetter Woodburn.
There was no Ballina Cup run the following year however due to the war but it continued again in 1916.
In 1917 the Ballina Cup prize money was only $190.
Today the race offers $50,000 in stakes.
